There is a common device in my dreaming which almost always appears as an elevator that functions in bizarre ways. I have to wonder what it would have been before there were machines, since stairs or a ladder would not be able to produce these effects… (falling sideways, spinning, sudden accelerations in a variety of directions, &c.)
