Science has so buried the meaning of the Sky that, without a map, it is nearly impossible to reassemble it. But our distant ancestors were less confused. Although their ideas did not match those of science and we might say they did not know what the sky ˚was˚, their awareness extended far beyond nomenclature into nonordinary domains we have badly misunderstood. It was not they who were primitive. It is us.
