A planet is like a sort of peculiar inverted living vase in which, if you keep the temperature just about right, you get all these little bits of slime and such, which soon become self-interested, and complexify in waves of growth involving symbiosis and competition. Soon they are interested in their world, the sky, the universe. A little later they are writing canny notes about this.
