A preying mantis molts 7 times throughout its normal lifespan. Each molt is an encounter with death. For many hours the mantis is trapped in its old skin, unable to move or change its circumstances. If it emerges successfully, it gains radical new abilities. Around the 5th molt it gains wings, and flight. The developmental path our souls take is analogous, but invisible.
