In this video I discuss the problem of ‘failure to update’ in our traditional use of nouns. This error occurs when the target referent undergoes such a radical transformation over time that the previously traditional word for something should be discarded, drawn significantly into question, or replaced. My primary example is ‘human’. When have we become something that no longer reasonably qualifies, or is so different from all historical instances that we should interrupt the primacy of the common word and replace it with something more indicative of the current state?
