In our common daily lives and thought, conversation and media… there are an array of serious problems with the behaviors we engage in that we think of as evaluation. With even a modest degree of awareness, it is apparent that a: our evaluative methods are deceptive and clumsy, where they are not simply wrong, and b: truth in language (i.e. the truth that a statement is being made in language) is confused with the truth of propositions themselves. This is a problem familiar to those who study nonordinary consciousnes (i.e schizophrenia).
There are also catastrophic problems with the scope of a proposition in language. It’s easy to generalize, but generalizations are often used to derive what I call ‘the worst common denominator’ from some continuum that we refer to with simple words.
In this recording, I discuss various ‘orders’ of truth or verity, some of the problems we commonly face, and some ways that we can ascend from the morass of common habits and behaviors to something that at least begins to resemble actual insight or intelligence.
