“So, your species has a disease. You can think of it in different ways, or call it different things… but, effectively, your minds are infected with something I’ll call Formal Representational Cognition. This is what that story about bad things happening at The Tree a long time ago… is about.
Simply stated, this means that »you are inclined to replace relationships with representations». Functions. Images. Stories. Description. Machines. Numbers. Photographs. Words.
If you did that in your own body, you’d be dead instantaneously. Nothing could save you.
The world is a bit more robust — you can get away with that for a short period of time, until the toxicity-debt that results from this behavior begins to produce feedback… and spread from specific locations where it is most severely concentrated… to all locations.
And that’s what’s going on, right now.
But if you keep doing this, let me be clear: »everything dies. Because you can’t eat pictures of food, and photographs of the anciently conserved ecologies that your species are ambient expressions of can’t keep you alive for a fucking picosecond.
So either you learn to do something other than what you have historically done with these faculties, you learn their dangers and acquire immunity to them… or you, and everything on Earth… will come to an end.
You might think the world is resilient — and it is. But only to a degree. And the human fascination with machines and technologies can easily overcome that resilience. Forever. And you’re on the brink of that. Right now.
Which means the window in which you have the option to change your course… is closing. Or … it already closed.
So you better rethink your fascination with machines and representations. And remember what actually matters: relationships. Now. Or else.”
