I was speaking with a friend last night and we were talking about ‘old stories’ (i.e creation stories, spirit stories, hero stories). Some of these are thousands of years old.
It occurred to me that when we are deprived of a deep familiarity (a ceremonial familiarity) with such stories, and a relationship with them that places them in a foundational role in the psyche, then there is little or no context to assist us in understanding ‘great dreams’… those dreams which are not merely ordinary, but arrive as messages from the beyond, the between, and deep within ourselves.
As he has some of these stories, and I have some as well, we are both aware, to a degree, of their significance. But those who have no such stories… what are they to make of the great dreams that come to us throughout our lives?
