I’ve seen similar (and far more complex) behavior in spiders… and other invertebrates.

“My friend watched an orb weaver who had snagged a wasp in her web. After several unsuccessful attempts at subduing this dangerous prey, the spider retreated to the corner of the web for a minute. Then, she suddenly moved down, threw a loop of web around the wasp’s abdomen, pulled up and immobilized it, then came in and bit the neck of the wasp, which laid her forelegs on the spider as she died.

While watching this encounter, my friend came to the conclusion that the spider retreated to deliberate the best way to kill that wasp. Operating on a problem at the center of her skills, she devised a solution to a deadly problem. Invertebrate intelligence. Why not consciousness?”
