I got that strange intuitive nudge the first time I encountered the modern derogative slang usage of the name Karen. Instinctively, I recoiled, while at the same time understanding, essentially, what was going on — as well as the intentions that catalyzed it — in a way not dissimilar to how someone who wasn’t questioning this would.
But I had seen the same principle in play before, in like, kindergarten. No, actually, it was first grade.
The public conversion of a common proper name (or perhaps any first name) to a slur is disquieting. And perhaps dangerous. Or even symptomatic.
I get the joke. But I am really suspicious about this development, even if I cannot entirely unpack it right now.
