I was listening to Matt Taibbi tell Brett Weinstein the story of the Tsunami in Indonesia as an analogy of ‘what’s going on’ right now. I’ll paraphrase:

In Indonesia, Tsunami are not a regular occurrence, so the people there are not familiar with them. When the Tsunami hit, the ocean suddenly receded dramatically. So the people walked out onto the wet sand, remarking on the strangeness of fish flopping around on the sand, and all the other sea creatures that had been stranded as though this was an invitation to spectate. Of course, when the tidal wave came, all of those spectators were obliterated; none of them were ever seen or heard from again.

And this is the situation right now. The waters that hid the fictions our societies are based upon have receded, and, apparently, vast populations of people consider this a time to spectate and toss their pet grievances or concerns in the hat. No one appears to understand that societal collapse is an actual process… with staggering repercussions… because we haven’t seen anything resembling this in our lifetimes.

Right now, we’re in the phase where the waters have momentarily receded. But when the wave comes, there won’t be any escape, because it will be too late to prepare or even respond to the monumental and abjectly inhumane forces that will then proceed to bury us alive…

It’s not clear that there’s a path through what’s coming, but if we are to make one together, we had best recognize at least this aspect of what’s presently afoot. The fictions we lived and depended on are about to be »over with. If we don’t replace them, together, intelligently, with something we can survive and understand… then survival and understanding will become ghosts… if not demons.
