To be clear: It’s my sense that this is a time when we have to be selective about rejecting someone’s intelligence or insight simply because we cannot sign up for his or her entire card.
The other day someone was surprised when I said that Jordan Peterson was brilliant. He is. I learn from him all the time. This doesn’t even slightly suggest that I agree with him »overall, rather, that, in listening to him… I gain new perspectives.
Some of those new perspectives require I entertain ideas with which I may very fervently disagree… or which I would be unlikely to produce or champion myself…
I’m extremely wary of pushing anyone who I can find something to disagree with to the margins of my attention — the days of ‘The Hero’ may be at an end… in the sense that we must weave insight from many diverse perspectives… rather than selecting only for those who ‘check all the boxes’ of our grievances, perspectives or concerns…
