One of the reasons that trolling can be almost infinitely sophisticated… is that it can manipulate the mind it will use to be communicated to other minds… having gained voluntary access to the vector of contagion’s »intent — usually by reinforcing a pet grievance, bias or delusion. In short: it pretends to be like you. Shorter: “This came from one of US.”

But there are other reasons just as astonishing; one can take peculiarly complex (and sometimes multi-layered) advantage of the incredibly narrow (and informed-by-externals) ambiguity in text to create various forms of traps in which the targets are induced to unintentionally demonstrate their own bias, ignorance, belief in something impossible, and so on… in such a way that spectators are aware of it, but the target never actually becomes aware of the situation and how they played directly into it.

This gambit takes advantage of the capacity to perform a momentary ‘takeover’ of the target’s capacity to broaden their own perspective or purpose in participation. The goal is to produce a predictable reaction in the target. One that causes them to naturally narrow their awareness and purpose to such a degree that they are effectively deprived of volition by the urgency of their own reactivity.
