The idea that a situation presents an either/or conflict (i.e: A : Safety or B : Freedom) is often the result of a false dichotomy, which is an example of a category error. Some of these errors are relatively trivial, but many absolutely lethal situations throughout history had their genesis in little more than this kind of ‘thinking’.

This kind of error occurs when we fail to properly frame (or others intentionally misframe) both the situation and characteristics or outcomes we might otherwise reasonably assert. In the same way that ‘up’ doesn’t conflict with ’round’, safety doesn’t conflict with freedom.

But there are persons and organizations that assert false dichotomies in order to sew confusion, discord, and, perhaps, violence… all of which they can profit from.

And just to be clear: freedom is an idea with infinite scope. But no matter what scope you ascribe to it, you have to be alive to have any…
