“I strongly suspect that people’s willingness to entertain ideas… and the intensity with which they cleave to specific perspectives or opinions… is directly related to their sense of clade membership. Not evidence. Not arguments. Not data. Not information.
Clade membership.
The Christians believe christianized insanity. The fake patriots manufacture and believe their canned bullshit. The conspiracists are (largely) going apeshit crazy with misdirected idiocy.
The scientists are doing science as usual, with some slight modifications for circumstance, and the new-age people believe … as usual… utterly nonsensical new-age things.
But it’s not because they became privy to some special ‘secret’ understanding of whatever the hell is going on. And, in case it isn’t obvious, nearly everyone who’s got an opinion is pretending that their understanding is the putative Rock of Gibraltar — the fact of facts — the ‘secretly more intelligent perspective’.
Most of those perspectives are actually just diseases masquerading as insight.
And they are being artificially propagated by systems that specialize in the direct and indirect manipulation not merely of human minds… but of »factions.
In most cases this entire charade has nothing whatsoever to do with data or research — which, in case this isn’t obvious — requires human interpretation to become meaningful or compelling… and is thus subject to error. Numbers do not equal causality or declare identity, even though you’re generally better off with data than conjecture.
So here’s what actually happened: when they figured out which clade they belonged with? That’s what determined what they were likely to believe, circulate, argue for… and, perhaps, die or even kill for.
There’s a clue in the pun within the word we use to indicate the stuff we circulate. In formation. In this case, the pun is worth paying very careful attention to the implications of.”
