By the time we get accurate data, the problems we are examining have usually grown far past the data. But there’s also the problem that our data is often partial, if not completely wrong. Add to this the problem that we cannot properly interpret the data because we don’t have a clear grasp on the environmental complexity and context… and the result is … well, delusional.
By the time we are able to actually understand the data our studies produce, it is most often far too late to respond.
“We took one small industry that most people have never heard of and found that its methane emissions were three times higher than the EPA assumed was emitted by all industrial production in the United States,” said John Albertson, co-author and professor of civil and environmental engineering. “It shows us that there’s a huge gap between a priori estimates and real-world measurements.”
