We raise our pitch when crying; these tones stand out, conveying unusual forms of information in what we might imagine is an accelerated medium or method of broadcast. Note that our technologies often employ fast, high-pitched signals (read: compression of information – more data-per-second than ordinary tones). Birds and dolphins both employ high-pitched sounds as their primary sonic communications method… Yet more still is true—somehow it seems to me our tears are heard in places distant and estranged from our knowledge.
So too, perhaps, our laughter—a behavior as similar in some respects as it is contagious.
