“Perhaps the most crucial informational divorce we can engage in is with what is referred to as ‘the news’. Personally, I treat it like a kind of combination of sewage and drug. The sewage is the remnants of what might have been actual relationships, the drug intoxicates us with fear, outrage, and the towering possibility of personal and communal contagion… placing us as recipient, victim, and vector of contagion. My recommendations are simple. First, take none of it into your heart or mind, second, study it to understand how it takes advantage of what is missing or counterfeited in our lives and relationships, and third, use the derived intelligence to establish other forms and purposes for our communications behavior. These rules are not explicit, but they are important to attend, correct and develop. In short? Do not participate in news… except perhaps where it has the potential to become empowering, and even then, with caution.”
