The Terrifying Leaf Was Hunting Me I was walking to the farmer’s market. When the terrifying leaf came. I heard it tracking me, hungry. It was more terrifying than all the monsters. You could hear its sound as it skittered. Dry and terrible, along the pavement behind me. I was so scared I started to remember whole books. And a bunch of advertisements from pages in Reader’s Digest. I could hear it coming. It was after me, for sure. I turned into an alligator, and ate a stone. The leaf kept coming. Like fast lava with a wing and tooth. Pretty soon there were many dogs around me. They were all sniffing me and licking me. This made the leaf pause. It stopped. A dragonfly picked it up and started to make a circle. I was watching that leaf very closely. It made a shadow on the ground like a puppet head. Inside the head, baby gods had dreams. Suddenly the rain came. I swam up into the rainclouds. The leaf got very wet. It became soggy. Then the dragonfly dropped it in a puddle. Which became lake Michigan. I saw a fisherman on the shore catch a huge fish. But I knew, and I tell you, it was that leaf. His hook was in its mouth. He put it on a stringer, by itself. And the stringer had a spike, which he pressed Into the earth, and where it penetrated the earth Moonlight came out from there. He was astonished because the fish shrank And kept shrinking, even the string shrank. Until all he had was a tiny minnow. With a little green thread through its gills. Then I swam down in the raindrops. I walked up to the fisherman and told him a joke. About a man who was being hunted by a deadly leaf. We laughed so much we started dancing. And then we had a sandwich made of stars.
