“Technically, facebook is an aspect of reality since it exists. Relationally, however, it is toxic in a vast number of ways for a vast number of its participants. The reasons have to do with our relationships with text communications and the purposes that originated this context. But they also have to do with various forms of actual isolation being made to appear to be connection. Personally, I think that any significant emotional investment in anything that happens here is probably dangerous to nearly anyone. As with language, we got the technology before we understood its dangers… or its actual opportunities. My point, however is simple: let’s not confuse the newsfeed with reality. It’s a vast mirage assembled primarily in the likeness of what prospers most easily. Much of that is fear, opinionation, rejection, defense, and various modes of display behavior. The newsfeed is (largely) a projection of the shadow of our possible social abilities… especially when unified by agreements that empower us to learn, solve problems, and grow together.”
