“After half an hour or so, I chose a volume that seemed to be what I was looking for, a fiction, by an author named A. Azaz. I found a chair, settled into it, and, skipping the placebic pages of dedication, contents and prologue, I turned to the first page. I removed my coat, fitted it upon the back of my chair and leapt into the heart of a cloud. The book was patient, burning me very gently, so that I’d barely notice. I took my breathing with each page, falling into the rivers and valleys of the black marks and white wormtrails cut into the air before me.”
