I’ve often mused that life is like a peculiar game of hide and seek, where birth represents hiding in a particular body and world. What is seeking me is an agent of the divine, a messenger, a spirit-friend, one who would catalyze the egg of profound growth and wonder I carry within me. One who, when I am found, might even exchange places with me… According to the rules of the game, the living one who is hiding sends little messages, through acts of beauty or grace. These ‘Easter eggs’ as it were attract the attention of the holy seeker, who discovers them, and follows them, over time, like a sort of magical breadcrumb trail. They could be acts of profound kindness, playfulness, moments of intimacy with nature, and poetic acts. So, for example, you might tear a tiny piece from a page in your favorite book, and bury it near a tree where you have dreamed, or rescue a stranger who is trapped in a terrible cage. When it rains in the city late at night, you might shed your clothes and dance in the street, or sing a nonsense song while walking in the dawn. You might rescue a fledgling, or aid a downed bee. Secret acts of wonder, beauty, and intimacy with Nature, our own souls, and love. And perhaps this idea is, itself, just such an act. And by reading, you are signaling my seeker. And I am signaling yours… and in this sacred moment we have linked our angels, and our souls… for purposes too divine to define or describe. For purposes of love, and rescue. For the secret purposes of grace.
