Yesterday, at the social pond, I was within about 2 feet of a blue heron for about 20 minutes while it fished. I could see the incredible prowess and living structure of this bird, the astonishing beauty and complexity of its plumage and way of being, and its face was within a couple of feet of my own. I was so close that I could actually smell the crayfish nymphs it was plucking from the bank and crunching up a bit before gulping them down. It was incredible.
