In order for “we” to be ‘fools’ there would have to be an actual “we”, which, since we never formed any, doesn’t exist. So it is the absence of a “we” that is foolish, and in the absence of any intentionally formed mutuality or collective, every kind of predator and parasite breeds naturally and explosively.

Ms. Kidder has some important things to say here, and I am also half Canadian. But in the absence of a ‘we’, fools is all that shadow can be… or appear to be. It is intelligent collectivity that confers the possibility of humanity upon us, mobs have none. And their presence is the symptom of a terrifying and catastrophic absence.
