I have always found cosmetics to be both confusing and terrifying. Women’s lips are so exquisite, that I always feel they are -hiding them- with lipstick, and it makes them appear (to me) scary-clown-ish. Many other features of ‘fashion’ are at once absolutely soul-rockingly terrifying (pointed shoes) and somehow strangely attractive (haute couture) whilst simultaneously implying alienation.
But here’s the other thing. That moist, wet receptivity is quite obviously metaphoric. I mean, it’s pretty hard to avoid the obvious implications. But that’s really conflicted, because, frankly, you are not ‘wet and receptive’ to the public at large, and yet this is what is being advertised, in terms of … you know, animal, evolutionary, recognizable… signals. So that part is conflicted, and strange, because I would feel really scared if I lived in a culture that encouraged me to, for example, make my nose up to appear that I had a constant erection…
