“They are so terrified of photographs that I actually began to adopt their culture. Now, when I see one, it is as if a murderer of families has suddenly appeared in the garb of an angel. I feel terror, a desire to flee, the palpable sense of the evil they understood implicitly has become my own. There is something unholy, diabolical — something malignant about photographs. They have trapped and stolen an essence which must never be caged… and in the process, we are all, somehow, made their victims whilst thinking we have been enriched, preserved, or ennobled.”
