Many people suppose that the fact that some figure posed in communication ‘could mean anything’ must mean that it is either unintelligible, useless, or both are confused. That is one possibility. Another is that it is a uniquely structured invitation to depart from strictly stipulated figures into those that catalyze the unique personal arrangements of possibilities, connotations, and associations that will emerge upon contact with the figure. This is neither meaningless nor unintelligible — unless one demands otherwise. But neither are its meanings stipulated or even, necessarily predictable. An unpredictable meaning, however, is not necessarily arbitrary — and even an arbitrary arrangement of meaning elements is not necessarily meaningless.
