The word idiot doesn’t mean stupid. It actually means ‘lost in a world of one’s own’. This allows for extremely extended group idiocy. Whole nations can be idiots, as we Americans have recently discovered in the mirror. Whole epochs of human history are taken up with every kind of extreme and violent idiocy imaginable. Really, we are not homo sapiens sapiens. We are homo idiotus tranvulnerus. Wherever we see a possibility for idiocy, we jump, entranced, right into the heart of the spiderweb, and then loudly pronounce our incipient divinity. Frankly? I’d rather be an insect. You’d have a better shot at intelligence.
