“When queried about the status of some aspect of the left side of the body, the left hemisphere, when isolated from the unifying corrections of the right (as by rh stroke), will often spontaneously and consistently deny association with a limb or body member. Or even the whole left side of the body. When pressed the person thus confused is apt to report that their left arm ‘belongs to the person in the next bed’, ‘is my mother’s’, ‘belongs to the person asking about it’, ‘was hidden there as a prank’, ‘is evidence of the tiny African who lives in my bed’, ‘belongs to the woman who is hiding in my bed’ and other bizarre explanations, sometimes involving conspiracies. When these are demonstrably disproven, there is no real effect on the experience for the sufferer, except frustration or anger. That cannot be my arm! They know it is a fact, and will endlessly invent and cling to fictions of this nature until the right hemisphere’s influence can be somehow restored. The right hemisphere has no such difficulty. Unfortunately, our cultures are formed in the image of the left.”
