The memory without the reactive drama of sentimentality is actually clearer and deeper than with this added. It is easy to see, however, that, because this fact is subtle, we may mistake the catalyzation of reactive drama for love, reverence, or longing. Yet the matter itself is simple: the clear mind is more intimate — once I begin to weep or tremble — the pool’s surface distorts wildly, and I am no longer ever really in contact with the memory. And even though I know this, I still respond from habit with momentous emotions and senses of loss.
