The thing poorly understood by scientists and laypeople alike is that there are many contexts in which it is impossible to remove the effects of the active practice of science upon whatever is purportedly being observed. This has far-reaching consequences for a single reason; practitioners of science often establish contexts in which the phenomenon they seek to verify or discredit cannot occur. In this case, they are armed with data that appear to discredit what was actually inhibited by their interaction with the phenomenon. The inclusion of science changes all roles and identites. We need to notice this, and realize that there are some forms of phenomenon which our current methods are ill-equipped to examine. These should not be relegated to the non-existent, but instead recognized as special contexts about which science, which depends upon formality, is as yet ill-equipped to comment.
