“In 2009 I began to attempt to tell anyone who might listen that the entire Pacific understructure was about to go into overdrive. That there would be extreme seismic disturbances, and these could generate deadly tsunami whose effects might penetrate far inland. I was ignored and laughed at.

Then came the quakes. They still scoffed. And then, a single significant tsunami. It turned out that the waves I had seen were not water. What rose and fell upon us, far inland, in waves, was radiation. The ocean itself was poisoned.

I admit, I wasn’t expecting a tsunami of human stupidity. I was precognitive, to be sure, but I had forgotten the most powerful unnatural force on my world: the extreme ignorance of my own people, magnified by technological accomplishment, and justified by forms of hubris too toxic to imagine. But these matters are not imaginary. They are factual, and their impact will continue to be felt long after me and my nervous alarms have been silenced.”
