Children are masters of trance, but they call it play. For them, this is to what adults think of as learning as flight is to crawling. Children use trance to create a relational and cognitive metaposition, which they then mutually inhabit and draw upon the benefits of. Many of these are heuristic.

Adults also use trance; or rather, the adult collectives. Governments, courts, religions, pseudo-religions, lawyers, doctors… police… authorities. They establish and sustain rituals which carry the force of law or custom, and induce trance in those who agree. It rarely involves learning in the ways children do, and often involves torture or the enforced supremacy of delusion.
