Is nostalgia for something ‘lost’? When I reflect upon this I find that I have not possessions, but what I might call ‘figures of memory’. These are aromatic to the emotions and the soul in the way that scents may be aromatic to the nose. I may become lost in their sudden effulgences of re-emergence. But what is lost? Nothing it seems. What I feel is not loss but distance. The deep and verdant distance that lies between my present circumstances and those whose constellations etched themselves in living light within me.
