Much of what we have misinterpreted as the paranormal is actually the function of brains and minds (a much more complex subject, really) like ours immersed in physical, cognitive and relational situations familiar to us. That is to say that the brain has functions that, in our bold misapprehension, we probably often misread as supernatural, when, in fact, upon careful examination, they can be triggered or inhibited somewhat mechanically by manipulating the brain. We are prone to misread effects we cannot easily understand or explain. On the other hand, the basic question remains, is reality spooky or not? That is, are there bizarre effects ‘at a distance’ in time and space, and are we, perhaps, peculiarly able to direct, detect, or participate in them? I suspect the answer is more strange than such a question’s structure can prepare us for. It’s neither, both, one, the other, and more.
