Knowledge can be understood as the cognitive equivalent of gravity. It’s useful. It allows for certain forms of structure. Through this metaphoric lens, we can more easily appreciate why children (and artists) are, essentially, ‘flying’. But this force easily retards insight, and gives rise to tyrannical agents of its power within human and personal culture. In such cases, it exerts a constrictive pressure that overtly denies glorious flights of internal revelation and understanding. It can be overcome in an unintuitive fashion that is the inverse of how we ordinarily think about flying… but in any case, escape velocity is required. And that looks a lot more like dreaming than it does like thinking. Or formulae.
