If it were traditional to think, for example, that insects were tiny spirit-beings from the stars, we might consider treating them with a modicum of respect or attention. Or learning from them through profound observation and metaphoric inquiry — just as our ancestors did. The putative intelligence we celebrate as a divine or natural gift was actually catalyzed this way: by observing other living beings in relation and development — and, particularly, insects.
