We know a place by what we interact with there, and how. So, too, we learn to know a person in similar, function-oriented ways. Should these become too abstract, that is to say, should the relationship be reduced primarily or completely to function, we call it something different than relation. Something like, for example, business. Deep relation may include business, but business is the lesser, by far. The reduction to function or commodity is business. And I wonder how often we can be discovered doing business where we should, for our own sakes, be doing intimacy.
