I’m pretty sure the first few kids to find it disappeared. It’s still back there. In the woods north of the lake. A hole. I don’t know what to call it actually. It’s like a crack in the world. It’s not a cave. Some kind of dimensionless cavity. That thing is so singular and weird that it could be the reason the world exists. You can learn things by watching it. It’s like a kind of water. The movements on the surface of it can instruct you with impossible knowledge. Sometimes I wonder what the others learned. The ones who disappeared. Did they go into it? I don’t know what is inside it. Is it a portal of some kind? It belongs to a category we have no name for; not a being and yet more than a being. Frankly, it is terrifying to consider. But I used to go and learn there. Impossible things. From watching the changing patterns on its surface. Something shining in it. In the darkness. Instructing me.
