I think in the dog world, having stuff on you is like speaking. To smell of something is to represent it. If the puddle of mud is excellent, one must wear it, completely. So, too, with the grass. And other things. Smelling each other is a way of directly exchanging factual information on what each dog has been into. They don’t sit around writing books about it, but they are having a conversation of a sort.
