What we refer to with the term ‘soul’ is vastly beyond our wildest ideas and speculations. No description can possibly encompass it; but if we begin with this apology, we can proceed to discuss some of its likenesses and capacities.
It is not something in your body. The body may be understood as a living material extension of the soul which descends from eternity and everywhere into specific relations with time, matter, and space — like a peculiar vehicle or costume. It is as if I am a living ‘fishing lure’ which my soul casts into timespace as a kind of avatar of its developmental and relational processes.
The soul is transtemporal and transpresent. It is like a peculiarly personal field event which is present in every moment and position of the universe (and beyond). This ‘transentient membrane’ is directly participating in every moment of every living and inanimate being — directly participating in every position in time… personally, uniquely, and divinely. Things, beings, relationships and moments are founded in the field of all souls — but each soul is ultimately pervasive.
The sudden onset of direct awareness of your soul is an experience beyond all possible comprehension: such an experience exceeds the sum of human models and stories in a way analogous to how the Sun exceeds a sketch of a matchstick. Most would not recognize it as themselves… it would seem to be an alien intelligence, an angel, or God. In fact, this revelation must generally occur in slow, gentle phases which are like waves. Were the veil to be lifted suddenly, your human mind would shatter from the sheer momentum of the soul’s sensing-awareness. The transfer between the soul and mind must be inhibited in order to preserve the mind’s relatively delicate and bounded structures.
