I doubt an animal would attempt to rescue a machine. But they will often attempt to rescue another animal, or even a human being, given the appropriate contexts and capacities.

We could take a lesson from this, because we commonly sacrifice ourselves, our children, our living places and even our lives for things like cars, computers, cell-phones, photographs, or even the ‘astonishing modern convenience’ we call ‘texting’.

One of these modes of intelligence has a future, and it isn’t the one we’re celebrating.
