To hold and defend a position is not necessarily wisdom’s face or fire. To position oneself to learn, and thus -=exceed one’s habitual positions=- requires discipline, enthusiasm, and curiosity. Given the option between winning the argument and exceeding the capacities and insight of my current position, I would almost always take the latter. Yet, in practice, I tend to cling to my convictions, ignore the paths to learning, and ‘fight’ for ‘what I believe in’. This is usually stubbornness or confusion masquerading as enlightenment. For me, the path to evolution is obvious: I must not confuse my passion for learning with my convictions, nor my will to ‘open the eyes of others’ with the necessity of opening my own.
