The reason memory champions use loci… locations with which they associate data to be recalled… is that it works. But they have ignored the most important aspects of why: it is evolutionary. For nearly all of evolutionary history, there was no reason to abstract data from place. Effectively ‘place was memory’, and that’s why this technique works so well, even though no one is apparently aware of this yet.
