I am given to understand that in ancient Greek (and perhaps elsewhere) terms that implied polarity were commonly used and understood as both polarities at once. Thus tragedy was comedy’s twin, nothing implied everything, poison and medicine were one, and catastrophe could insightfully be experienced as opportunity. We would do well to explore such matters in our own relationship with English, for our words and their polarizing implications deceive us into a flatness of values which reality can never acquire. Strange, how seductive we find it.
