There are a vast plethora of words and phrases which must attack your intelligence in order to take up residence. This is a ubiquitous situation in English, and a great many of our clichés and ‘common sense’ ideas are formed in precisely this way. Thus, we can indeed become dumber through correct learning — and this is a danger few are aware of and fewer still have any idea how to cope with.
