People who were or are in constant intimate contact with wild animals, soils, fish, insects, etc… acquire physical symbionts from all of these vectors. This means, essentially, a limited form of body-sharing. I suggest that any commensals that can be exchanged and survive the exchange in the new host would incline those hosts toward sensitivities that, though actually ordinary, we would experience as magical.
