It’s astonishing how compelling television was when I was a child. While there were exceptions, it was largely a big surgical experiment that would leave what was left of your authentic intelligence in a bloody pile.
Nonetheless, a few survived exposure with some modest degree of intelligence remaining. Fewer still were capable of using the invention to their actual benefit, and avoiding many of the implicit costs.
But TV was like a mosquito’s fart compared to the internet. And while the potential usefulness dramatically increased, so did the probable harm.
In 2011, many people live in front of monitors. -=And=- they have televisions right next to them…
