When I so much as glance at a tree, I am struck with the almost electrical sense that all of our stories about identity — the whatness aspect of reality — are explicitly erroneous. But they are reasonable, these sophisticated illusions. For if we were to actually admit anything like what is really happening in and around us, we would certainly have to become, by every reasonable standard, insane.
