To have what we generally call experience, an aspect of my awareness must stand aside and semi-continuously represent it back to me. This is all invisible, moment-to-moment, but can be revealed under peculiar or engineered circumstances… and if one realizes this, it’s an exceptional shock… reality… isn’t.
